With over twenty years of experience working in global institutions like Shell International and Oxford University, Ming Alsop-Lim has a broad international outlook which was refined through working on projects involving multiple stakeholders from different technical disciplines, countries and cultures. A firm believer in human agency, she is committed to supporting individuals to reach their fullest potential, irrespective of their backgrounds.
Ming is a trained and accredited professional coach from Erickson Coaching International. Before becoming a coach, she worked in five countries for Shell International in commercial and HR roles, and specialised in talent management, diversity & inclusion, and learning & development. Possessing keen business and cultural nous, she was expatriated from her hometown Singapore to Beijing and was part of the Shell Chemicals team which successfully negotiated the biggest Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) project in China in the early 2000s. Her passion for people development led her to global talent management roles in The Hague, Singapore, and Malaysia where she developed skills competence frameworks for over 5000 IT staff, cultivated talent pipelines, and promoted diversity initiatives. In Kuala Lumpur she designed intercultural coaching workshops for expatriates, successfully onboarding them to their new lives in an Asian Islamic country, and supported their spouses through career workshops to find fulfilling local employment.
Her interest in developing young people and giving back led Ming to work for Oxford University where she sought philanthropic support for bursaries, scholarships for BAME students, and Access & Outreach. Ming was instrumental in launching a mentoring programme for St Hilda’s College Oxford which linked up graduating students with alumnae mentors who provided internship opportunities and career advice. Invited to be a member of the university’s inaugural Race Equality Task Force, Ming worked closely with the Pro Vice Chancellors to spearhead diversity, equality and inclusion policies which positively impacted all students and staff. Throughout her career, Ming has often been handpicked to join pioneering projects due to her vision, creativity and focus on delivery. Her ability to build relationships and create easy rapport with people of all backgrounds makes her a superior team player and effective agent for change.
Ming studied for her BA degree in Geography at Oxford University, and MPhil degree in GIS & Remote Sensing at Cambridge University, on full academic scholarships. She is also an alumna of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Fellowship and IMD’s prestigious HR Leadership Development Programme. She is fluent in English and Chinese, and speaks them at the native language level.
Highly enthusiastic about youth development and community initiatives, Ming is charity board trustee for Oxfordshire Fund for Music which subsidises music lessons for financially disadvantaged students in state schools. Her active presence in civic life led her to be selected by the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office to draft the Singapore21 national report, on how to build a vibrant "People" sector with a strong sense of community in the 21st century. She has two children and is a core member of the school community, working with other parents and the school leadership to improve the educational outcomes of young people.
